Nansledan has been recognised among the preeminent projects worldwide for the quality of its urban design, placemaking and community building.

The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Charter Awards recognise exemplary work by those who design and build places people love and that make a difference to people’s lives.

Nansledan has been awarded a 2026 CNU Charter Award at Merit level in the annual awards, which are widely regarded as among the most prestigious honours in the field.

Nansledan was commended for its exemplary approach to placemaking, creating a mixed-income, walkable and sustainable extension to Newquay that combines affordable housing, thriving local centres, high-quality public spaces and strong community infrastructure while celebrating Cornwall’s distinctive character.

Masterplanner Hugh Petter, Director of Nansledan’s principal architects ADAM Architecture, recently attended the annual CNU Congress and Awards ceremony to celebrate the achievement.

Sam Kirkness, Executive Director of Development at the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “We are delighted that Nansledan has been recognised with a CNU Charter Award. This accolade reflects the dedication of everyone involved in creating a place that delivers lasting benefits for people, communities and the environment.

“At the Duchy of Cornwall, we are on a mission to become a world-leading impact organisation, and Nansledan demonstrates what that means in practice: creating beautiful, walkable neighbourhoods, supporting local businesses and jobs, providing affordable homes, and investing in the green spaces and community infrastructure that help people and nature thrive together.

“We are proud that Nansledan is helping to shape a healthier, more resilient future for Newquay, and we hope it can serve as an example of the positive impact thoughtful placemaking can achieve.”
