Nansledan’s bespoke hat maker Marcel Steyn is making history by opening a boutique in London’s iconic Savile Row

The skilled craftsman has been developing his unique brand under the name Marcel Rodrigues since 2017 and launched his Nansledan shop in 2020.

The high-end clothing and lifestyle store in Chi Myghtern Arthur Plen, is home to a workshop, where Marcel creates his sought-after hats by hand.

Last month, Marcel made history by opening his own store in Savile Row, known as the ‘golden mile of tailoring’.

It’s the first time the area has ever hosted a bespoke hat maker and the fashion world is already buzzing with excitement about the new arrival.

Marcel has appeared in many industry magazines and online platforms to talk about his latest move.

The self-taught hat maker is still firmly connected to Nansledan and will divide his time between his Cornish store and his new London venture.

“Being in Nansledan has given us the opportunity to expand our workshop and – quite literally – live by the sustainable ethos and principles which Marcel Rodrigues was founded on,” said Marcel, adding that he’s excited about the latest stage in his creative journey.

“We feel honoured to be not only part of Savile Row’s history but to be making it too.”

The new pop-up marks something of a homecoming for Marcel. He began his career as an apprentice at Cad & Dandy in Savile Row in 2008, where he first learned the art of bespoke tailoring.

Marcel moved to Cornwall with wife Becky and their three children in 2019 to expand his brand and open his first store at Hawksfield, Wadebridge. More space was soon needed and the move to Nansledan came in 2020, where Marcel has enjoyed working on new designs and expanding his customer base.

The bespoke hat making process begins with a consultation to find out exactly what the client wants, right down to the style and material of the lining.

Marcel prides himself on his sustainable ethos, making the most of materials already available to him.

Marcel, who is part Portuguese but grew up in South Africa, says his designs are the epitome of luxurious, sustainable fashion and he’s looking forward to sharing them with a wider audience.
