Queen Diambi of the Democratic Republic of Congo Visits Nansledan

On 12 March, the Duchy’s Nansledan team were honoured and delighted to host Her Royal Majesty Queen Diambi of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her Majesty is an advocate for sustainability, with existing connections to Cornwall and has expressed a focus on finding solutions applicable to rapid urbanisation in the Congo. She visited Nansledan to hear more on the lessons learnt from building sustainable communities, including detail on low carbon construction, and nature recovery through green infrastructure providing natural irrigation and boosting biodiversity.

HM Queen Diambi holds a particular interest in reducing plastic waste and the team were able to introduce Nansledan resident Jo Ruxton MBE to join them. Jo is a conservationist and ocean advocate, setting up Ocean Generation. She is the former producer of the BBC’s Blue Planet and the award-winning documentary A Plastic Ocean.

The visit included a tour of Nansledan and a presentation highlighting the positive social impact and environmental benefits of working with local people and supply chains to deliver healthy sustainable communities, like Nansledan.

Her Majesty was also delighted to meet pupils in Skol Nansledan, commenting upon how well they are nurturing talented, confident children in a safe and sustainable learning environment.

Her Majesty expressed her thanks for “an inspiring and enlightening visit”, leaving a strong impression on everyone she met with her warmth, kindness and sunny disposition – as can be seen in the photos of her colourful dress matching the vibrancy of Nansledan!

We wish HM Queen Diambi all good wishes in those endeavours to bring more sustainable development to communities in the Congo.
