Another exciting new business has opened its doors at Nansledan, the Duchy of Cornwall’s extension to the seaside town of Newquay.

Ladyvale Bakery and Cafe officially opened on July 9th, and is owned by husband and wife team, Lara and David Spurrell. The duo also run the award-winning Woods Café in Cardinham Woods near Bodmin, alongside their own celebration and wedding cake business.

A native of Quintrell Downs, Lara now lives with her family in nearby St Columb. With Nansledan right on her door step, it is the perfect spot for her business to grow. And she has plenty of company at Nansledan – her sister Hannah runs The Blossom Room beauty salon in the Seahorse Building.

Lara said: “This property really ticked all the boxes for us, we wanted to have our own space. It was affordable and has offered us a real feeling of security. It has meant we could invest in our new café and we have set it up with lots of space in the back, meaning that we can use the premises to bake for the Woods Café as well. We received EU funding from the LEADER programme to help with the kitchen fit-out.

“Woods Café and the Ladyvale Bakery are two quite different establishments, but they do share the same principles.”

Lara and her team make everything fresh on site. They use Cornish produce where possible, only using local suppliers.

The bakery is as environmentally conscious as it can be, tying in with the sustainable ethos of the Duchy of Cornwall. They don’t offer takeaway cups for customers, instead offering reusable cups for sale. The business is also planning to offer reusable cake tins for takeaway.

They have also cut out all single-use plastic, make all their own cordials on the premises and have installed taps that run both ordinary and fizzy water.

Lara added: “We are really pleased with how everything is going so far, we have had a wonderful response and we have great staff who support us. We have an existing customer base in Newquay, thanks to the Woods Café, which has been so beneficial for us.

“We suit Nansledan, and Nansledan suits us.”

Ben Murphy, Estate Director for The Duchy of Cornwall, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Ladyvale Bakery to the ever-growing and thriving Nansledan community and we wish them every success for the future. I was always really impressed every time I visited Woods Café and I’m sure Ladyvale Bakery will be a resounding success. We love their sustainable ethos, Lara’s cakes and luscious water melon drinks! Ladyvale Bakery is a great new addition to Nansledan which is continuing to offer fantastic opportunities for new homes, new businesses and jobs for local people.”

Nansledan is being developed on Duchy-owned land to the east of Newquay and will eventually comprise around 4,000 homes mixed with retail, offices, workshops, green spaces and a range of community facilities. It is being built by a consortium of South West building companies which includes Wainhomes, CG Fry & Son and Morrish Builders.
