The Duchy of Cornwall has started work on a new bus link that will connect the eastern side of Newquay into the heart of Nansledan.

The link, being built on Duchy-owned land, will see a new road built from Yeoman Way near the Newquay Sports Centre across Trevenson Road. It will connect into the heart of Nansledan via the western arm of the Newquay Strategic Route, which the Duchy has already built at a cost of around £6m in preparation for Nansledan joining up with the town over time.

The works, which include a wide footpath for pedestrians and cyclists, is schedule to be completed in December this year and is expected to open later next year, once the rest of the Newquay Strategic Route from the A362 at Hendra into Nansledan is completed by Cornwall Council’s contractor Cormac. This will include a bridge over the Chapel Stream and a further bridge over the Par to Newquay branch line, which is being built by Network Rail.

The Newquay Strategic Route will connect into Market Street, an exciting new commercial heart for Nansledan, where groundworks have been prepared and designs are underway for new retail, food and beverage outlets, offices and leisure uses. The first commercial premises in Market Street are expected to be available in late 2025/early 2026.

The Duchy is also undertaking major works in the Chapel valley at the southern end of Nansledan. This has included the construction of a granite-faced retaining wall that will overlook balancing ponds and a much broader and ecologically important green corridor incorporating areas for walking and cycling.

The wetlands habitat will include 10 large man-made ponds that are currently under construction. As well as being a haven for wildlife the area will be able to contain over 26 million litres of water – the equivalent of more than 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
These ponds will manage stormwater and surface water run-off from Nansledan to ensure that the local drainage system is not overwhelmed during periods of heavy rain.

Peter James, Nansledan Project Manager at the Duchy of Cornwall said: “Investing in all this sustainable infrastructure in Nansledan is vitally important to the Duchy’s vision of sustainable stewardship for communities, enterprise and nature.

“Nansledan will eventually be home to 4,000 new homes and support a similar number of jobs, and by putting this infrastructure in now will ensure Nansledan continues to grow as a sustainable community for all to enjoy and benefit from.

“This ranges from better public transport links with town to enriching biodiversity with new wetlands habitats that tackle flood risk. Completion of the Newquay Strategic Route will also ease the traffic burden on neighbouring communities while bringing ever greater vitality to Nansledan, helping local businesses thrive.”
