Nansledan’s sister development in Newquay has scooped its fourth award this year.

Tregunnel Hill won the Urban Design award in this year’s INTBAU (International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism) Excellence Awards, presented at the Royal Society of Arts in London. It was one of just four winners from a total of 83 entries from 23 countries worldwide.

Tregunnel Hill is a 10-acre Duchy of Cornwall development of 174 dwellings in Newquay and was completed in 2016. It is where many of the urban design principles which underpin Nansledan were honed.

Ben Murphy, Estate Director for the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “Tregunnel Hill has quickly established itself as a thriving new community in Newquay, which is in no small part down to the strong local identity created by the use of local materials in the form of a local Cornish vernacular seaside town.  

“Tregunnel Hill is very much the first realisation of HRH The Prince of Wales’s vision for Nansledan, which is now under construction by the same team, and is a product of close collaboration between the Duchy of Cornwall, its consortium of builders, their consultants and the people of Newquay.”

Tregunnel Hill was built by CG Fry & Son and Morrish Builders. Those same builders are now working with Wainhomes as part of the Duchy of Cornwall’s consortium building Nansledan.

Commenting on the award, Hugh Petter, director at ADAM Architecture, masterplanner and co-ordinating architect for Tregunnel Hill and Nansledan, said: “This clutch of awards shows how Tregunnel Hill has become a real hallmark for quality and sustainability not just in Cornwall but around the world, and it is those values that we are translating into the delivery of Nansledan.”

Jonathan Schifferes of the Royal Society of Arts and Chair of the Judging Panel for the INTBAU Excellence Awards, said: “It was inspiring to see that local traditions in architecture and urban form are, in all corners of the globe, being adopted, adapted and reinterpreted to address contemporary but enduring needs: spaces for dwelling and learning, for production and consumption, for communities to celebrate, commemorate and support themselves.”

In October Tregunnel Hill was awarded the 5-star award at the 2018 UK Property Awards in the category of Residential Development in Cornwall. Judging focused on design, quality, service, innovation, originality, and commitment to sustainability.

In June Tregunnel Hill was highly commended at the Planning Awards 2018, which are run by Planning Magazine in conjunction with PlanningResource and PlacemakingResource.

And in May Tregunnel Hill was awarded the Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award, regarded as the pre-eminent awards for excellence in urban design around the world.
