An art gallery and studio is the latest business to open at Nansledan.
John Greig Artworks is a studio and gallery for local artist John Greig with his daughter Lucy working alongside him doing prints and framing. The studio and gallery opened in the Watergate Building in October and is already proving popular.
John has been living at Nansledan for around a year, so he is already very familiar with the area.
He said: “When we came to look at houses here, I noticed there were business units that were also available and saw the opportunity to create an inviting laid back studio. We have really bought into the Nansledan ethos, so decided to look into it, and here we are.
“We are planning to open three or four days a week for people to come in and explore. As well as being a place for me to work, it is somewhere to show a mixture of my art pieces. We have limited editions, artist hand-finished editions and originals, which are constantly changing as the pieces go to St. Ives, Padstow and London.
“It also helps to keep the space interesting and fresh. We have collaborated with Elspeth Walker who owns Sweetlime in St Ives who has sourced a mix of glass and ceramics to complement the art that I display.”
John’s paintings aim to recreate the atmosphere and feeling for a particular place or setting, rather than just a visual representation and he is always looking for different materials and techniques to work in.
John has two main subjects that he paints – Beach Life and City Life. His Beach Life series is all about the space, skies, and figures in the landscape and aura that creates the feelings and memories of Cornwall.
Similarly, his City Life paintings aim to create the ambience of urban environments. The focus is on no particular one thing, engaging in a whole location with its buildings, figures, shapes, and light.
Outside John Greig Artworks, John jointly shows work with a community of seven other artists at Back Road Artworks in St Ives, a gallery where he is a director.
John added: “Nansledan has proven to be a nice place for clients to come and discuss work with me, rather than just trying to catch me on the one day a week I tend to spend in St Ives.
“It is a brilliant place to work and a lot of people have been interested in coming in and having a look around. The good thing about the new studio/gallery is that it enables people to come and take a look at the different things I do.”
