Visitors to Nansledan may have noticed the addition of a three-metre high yellow seahorse on one of the Art Deco buildings that have taken shape around the new square called Kresennik Pennfenten.
The seahorse adorns the Chi Morvargh (Seahorse House) building, overlooking the granite obelisk monument that was installed at the centre of the square earlier this year.
Made of powder-coated lightweight zinc, it was designed by Robert Adam of Adam Architecture and is among a number of features that pick up on the Art Deco theme.
Adam Architecture’s Hugh Petter, masterplanner and co-ordinating architect at Nansledan, said: “Art Deco is part of the seaside character of Newquay so key buildings at Nansledan are designed in an Art Deco way and will define the new square, Kresennik Pennfenten.
“In addition to the seahorse there is a blue wave pattern around the parapet at the top of the building and a starburst over the corner. New lighting will complete the composition and the idea is to create a very distinctive place.”
Much of the western edge of the new square is complete and is part of the first two phases of Nansledan.
