A new wine shop and deli has opened at Nansledan offering wines from around the world and foods from across the region.
The Old Garage is the second specialist wine shop and deli opened by owners Lucy and Julian Chenoweth in the past two years.
Stemming from Lucy’s passion for wine, the couple teamed up with expert sommelier Elly Owen (pictured) before opening of their first shop on the Roseland Peninsula last year.
Elly, who was named Sommelier of the Year at the Sommelier Wine Awards 2020 early this year, is now Wine Director and a partner in the business.
She said: “We are essentially a wine shop and we have a small deli that is centred around foods from the South West. We have wines from all over the world, which start from around £10 per bottle, but really over-deliver.
“We have some really exciting stuff – you come in and get something that you really know and love or be pleasantly surprised by trying a wine you’ve never had before.
“Although we aren’t a restaurant, anyone is welcome to pop in and have a glass of wine alongside some delicious snacks or charcuterie from our deli.”
Lucy, Elly and the team were on the lookout for the perfect location to open a second branch of their new brand and were keen on the Newquay area and once they saw what Nansledan had to offer, they were sold.
They are currently leasing a unit on Chi Tennyson but intend to buy it eventually. The team took advantage of the most recent lockdown to move into their new unit and prepare the shop for opening.
“Nansledan has everything we need, as soon as we saw the property, we knew we had to have it,” added Elly. “Nansledan is a wonderful place to be and this is a really great opportunity for us. We thought our shop would be a great fit at Nansledan, not just for us, but for the community as well. We are thrilled to be here.”
In the future, Elly is looking to hold events at the Old Garage and is currently exploring a number of different options, including theme nights.
She said: “We want to give people the opportunity to learn more about what they are drinking. It’s not about buying the most expensive bottle of wine; it’s about educating people about what they personally enjoy and like to drink.
“We have a real range on offer. While we do have a strong Cornish presence, we have wines and spirits from all over the world. We have a wine for most people, and we are not at all pretentious.
“Our staff are amazing – anyone who comes into either of our shops will have a fantastic experience.”
Ben Murphy, Estate Director at the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “The Old Garage is a fantastic up and coming Cornish brand with a great ethos and integrity, which is why we are so thrilled to see their second shop opening here at Nansledan. I can’t wait to learn from Lucy, Elly and the team’s passion for sourcing quality wines from around the globe, served up with local food pairings and friendly customer service. The Old Garage is the fourth new business to open in Nansledan during the current pandemic, and I am sure they will be popular with the community.”
The Old Garage is the latest business to open its doors at Nansledan. Most recently, others have included Blush Hair and Beauty and homewares store, Teylu Trading.
Nansledan is being built on Duchy-owned land to the east of Newquay and will eventually comprise around 4,000 homes mixed with shops, offices, workshops, green spaces and a range of community facilities. It is being built by a consortium of South West building companies, which includes Wainhomes, CG Fry & Son and Morrish Homes.
