HRH The Duke of Cornwall delighted residents and businesses when he paid a visit to Nansledan, the Duchy of Cornwall’s extension to the seaside town of Newquay.
The Duke, who was in Cornwall for the day, spent the afternoon touring Nansledan, chatting to residents and local businesses, and hearing updates from the project team.
Following a walkabout through the development, the Duke visited local farm shop and café deli, The Little Cornish Pantry, and nearby businesses The Blossom Room, Bliss Bridal Gowns, The Barber Lounge and Newquay Holiday Lettings.
Judith Eley, and her niece Alex, who jointly own The Little Cornish Pantry, presented HRH The Duke of Cornwall with Cornish cream tea fudge and jam from their recently launched local food range, Alfreda’s Kernowek Kegin, named in memory of Judith’s mother.
Alex said: “He just put us at ease, he is such a lovely, genuine person and has a real interest in what you’re doing. He wasn’t rushed, he took the time out of his day and wanted to walk around the shop and explore what we have here, so it was a really lovely visit.”
Judith added: “His Royal Highness was very interested to know about how we started our journey, and our passion for the Cornish food industry, as well as our passion for being plastic free. When we started the business, we were really keen to be totally plastic free as far as our takeaway café is concerned. We’re really proud to have achieved that and to be a Newquay plastic free champion.”
The Duke also spent time visiting the new Skol Nansledan primary school, observing progress on the build and meeting with regional contractor Midas Construction, where he also signed a roof tile that will be used on the building.
The 14-classroom facility will cater for 420 children when full and is due to open its doors in September. The Duke unveiled the name of the school when he visited the site last year. Skol is Cornish for ‘school’ – fitting with the theme of Cornish names used throughout Nansledan, which means ‘broad valley’.
James Smith, Senior Project Manager at Midas, said: “It was such an honour to welcome His Royal Highness to Skol Nansledan and we were very proud to show him the progress we have made on this fantastic new facility for the local community.”
Nansledan is being developed on Duchy-owned land to the east of Newquay and will eventually comprise around 4,000 homes mixed with retail, offices, workshops, green spaces and a range of community facilities. It is being built by a consortium of South West building companies which includes Wainhomes, CG Fry & Son and Morrish Builders.
