Families and friends came together over the special bank holiday to take part in a series of fun-filled events to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
There was a street party on Friday 3rd June, which included a dog show, sports activities, a barbecue, cream teas and plenty of live music.
On Sunday 5th June, a teddy bears’ picnic was held at Newquay Orchard.
Organisers say the weekend was a huge success, with locals and visitors out in full force to make the most of the celebrations in honour of the Queen’s 70-year-reign.
Nansledan resident Theresa Ferguson helped to put together the street party. She said: “A massive thanks needs to go out to all those who helped to make the day special.
“But more importantly, we want to thank our residents and visitors. Without them the day would not have been the success it was.”
One of the participants in Friday’s sports day activities was seven-year-old Joseph Poole, who just two years ago was undergoing intensive treatment for lung and kidney cancer.
Now in remission, Joseph, known as Joey, took part in as many of the races as possible and was delighted to win a bronze medal – which he was still proudly wearing two days later.
Mum Sarah said it had been fantastic to see her son enjoying himself so much.
“He absolutely loved it,” said Sarah, adding that the family moved to Nansledan last year and Joey had already made lots of new friends. “To look at him, you’d never guess what he’s been through,” she said. “He was so proud that he’d won a medal. He rushed straight in to tell his sisters. It really was a lovely day.”
Among the other star attractions on Friday were the 70-plus entrants in Nansledan’s first ever dog show, organised by Sarah Hutchings of Ladyvale Bakery.
The crowds were kept well fed with a cream tea at the bakery, plus there was a barbecue hosted by Shiva Café, Little Cornish Pantry served up a variety of jubilee-themed goodies and there were cocktails and nibbles at The Old Garage.
On Sunday, families were invited to take part in a special teddy bears’ picnic on the lawn in Newquay Orchard, organised by Suzanne Featherstone, Chair of the Nansledan Community Association.
She said: “We had a team of volunteers who did a wonderful job on the day, making sure everyone had a good time. The weather wasn’t that great, but rain definitely didn’t stop play.
“There were plenty of challenge-type games to keep adults and children entertained. It was lovely to see people enjoying the picnic and the orchard as part of what was a really busy and lovely weekend.”
