Newquay Community Orchard’s annual spring fayre has been hailed a great success, having attracted almost 3,000 people.
Bathed in glorious sunshine, the fayre brought together local people to celebrate spring on 29th April.
Live music, talks and activities for all the family, including yoga, storytelling and woodturning demonstrations, were intermingled with plenty of food, drink and things to buy from local vendors such as Atlantic Brewery & Distillery, The Cornish Table and Kern.
The community orchard, which is situated on seven acres of land gifted by the Duchy of Cornwall on the western edge of Nansledan, were thrilled with the number of people who came along.
Lyn Trewella, Project Administration at Newquay Community Orchard, said: “We are delighted with the response from the community, nearly 3,000 people came and enjoyed the day and space. We are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved so far here and we’ll be doing many more events like these in the future.”
Not only were visitors encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk to the fayre, they were also encouraged to be eco-friendly and bring their own bags, containers and coffee cups for all their purchases.
Plastic Free Newquay gave a talk to visitors alongside Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Newquay Marine Group, Newquay Beach Care and Fathoms Free. Emma Gunn from Never Mind the Burdocks led a free foraging trail from Newquay town centre.
Natalie Frost, Operations Manager at Newquay Community Orchard, said: “There was such a lovely atmosphere, people were really getting excited about what the future holds for Newquay and the support for our plans here was overwhelming.”
The fayre was funded by FEAST Cornwall, The Prince’s Countryside Trust alongside the Duchy of Cornwall and the consortium of South West building companies who are constructing Nansledan: CG Fry & Son, Wainhomes and Morrish Builders.
Luke Berkeley, Managing Director of Newquay Community Orchard, said: “We are so proud of the effort put in by our volunteers, and they should be incredibly proud of the space that they’ve created for the community. A huge thanks to all those that contributed to a really special community event.”
Newquay Community Orchard is a community-led project that has not only established a multi-functional green space where people of all walks of life can come together to work, rest and play, but provides mental health therapy, educational services to local schools and residents, and works to support the local community through events, rehabilitation and job creation.
Nansledan is being built on mainly Duchy-owned land to the east of Newquay and will eventually comprise some 4,000 new homes mixed with retail, offices, workshops, greenspace and a range of community facilities.
